The Priesthood of The Believer |
|
| The New Testament teaches us that every true
believer is called by God to fulfill the responsibilities of the Priest. When
boiled down these duties are to represent God to mankind, and mankind to God. The first of
these responsibilities includes sharing the Word of God with all those who are willing to
consider. The second of these responsibilities involves intercessory prayer on behalf of
the unbeliever and fellow Christians. We will list a few scriptures that will instruct us Hebrews the 5th chapter verses 1 through 4. Verse 4 is the key to our understanding of these verses. He advises us that the office of priest is assigned by God only. 1: For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: 2: Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. 3: And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. 4: And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. It should be noted in the following Scripture, verse 5, we are told that there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. This responsibility falls to the body of Christ, the visible church on earth. First Timothy chapter 2 verses 1 through 8. 1: I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; 2: For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. 3: For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; 4: Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth. 5: For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6: Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. 7: Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle, (I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not;) a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity. 8: I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. The following verses give us our assignment to this responsibility. First Peter verses 5 and 9 5: Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. 9: But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Revelation, chapter 1 verse 6, And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen Revelation chapter 5 verse 10 : And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth Revelation chapter 20 verse 6 6: Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. Second Chronicles chapter 7 verse 14 gives us the ultimate results if the Christian population would except the responsibility of the Priesthood 14: If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. |
